Welcome

Welcome to our blog site. We are looking forward to blogging this term.

Blogging will help us with our reading and writing skills. We will also learn about cyber safety and using the Internet wisely. It will help us keep in touch with our school community and hopefully, people from around the world. We will be global citizens.

Caught Reading

Congratulations to Cygnet who was 'Caught Reading' this week. Cygnet chose a 'Captain Underpants' book. Enjoy reading your book Cygnet.

The Protectors

Do you know how to protect yourself from bullying? Well this week the Protectors showed us how we all have 'super powers' within ourselves that help us stand up to bullies. The show also had some valuable advice on how to protect ourselves when we are on the Internet. We loved singing the songs which remind us that:

A Protector stands up for themselves and for what is right or fair. They won't let themselves be a victim, a bully or a bystander.

Big Day Out

To celebrate Under 8's week, the Prep - 2's went along to Queens Beach school for a morning of fun filled activities. The theme for this year was 'Language - actively connecting children to their world'.

Rhiannon wrote and made a lovely booklet describing her day out.

Our Trip to Queens Beach State School - Written by Rhiannon

On Thursday 23rd May, Prep to 2's went to Queens Beach to do some fantastic activities. We did some face painting, made necklaces, answered questions and got some balloons. I had a wonderful day.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Today we celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime. All classes from Prep to Year 3 had a visitor who came and read The Very Cranky Bear to them. Chappy Kal came to our classroom and scared us with his Cranky Bear roars! We then drew a picture of the Cranky Bear. Watch the video of The Very Cranky Bear. There is also an interview with Cranky Bear and Bob Monster.

Reading

These students have finished a special reading course with Mrs Cristaldi. They have been practising their reading 4 times a week with her. This week they received certificates for all their effort and hard work this year. Keep reading everybody.

Caught Reading

Well done to Angela and Corey who were caught reading last week and this week. They have both tried very hard to improve their fluency and expression when reading. Happy reading Angela and Corey.

Smiley Badges

Congratulations to everyone who received their Smiley Badge this week. These students always follow our school expectations. At Bowen State School, they are Learners,  Respectful, Responsible, and Safe.

Relay for Life

Our Student Council supported Relay for Life Cancer Research by having a free dress day on Friday. We also held a relay all day with each class going outside for 30 min to keep the relay going. The batons did not stop all day. Some students choose to keep moving by skipping, running or walking around the oval track. All donations will go to the Cancer Council.

NAPLAN

This week the Year 3's sat their NAPLAN tests. Everyone did their very best. A very big thank you to the P and C and Blake's mum who made us some brain food snacks to have before we sat the tests.

This week at school our positive behaviour focus is

“Walking calmly on pathways and stairs”

We will:
  •  walk calmly
  •  walk one step at a time
  •  rails are for hands
  •  walk on the left hand side in single file
  •  move calmly and peacefully
We will do this around the school, in the playground, under buildings, on stairwells and on pathways.

Science

Is a seed living? This is the question we asked in science this week. We have discovered living things breathe, use energy, move and reproduce. We are going to watch our seeds, take photos and measure their growth to discover why they are living.

Caught Reading

Congratulations to Ethan and Angellina who were 'Caught Reading' this week. Angellina chose a 'Kitten Club' book while Ethan chose a book about 'Extinction'. Happy reading Ethan and Angellina.

Sports

What a busy week we have had trying out new sports! This week we tried out tennis and rugby union.

In tennis we played mini tennis games,  practised ball skills and used the 'speed serve' machine. This machine could measure how fast we could throw or serve the ball.

On the field we practised our rugby union skills and also had a go at trying to score a try. Cygnet and Sophie were chosen as the best players of the day. They won great prizes.

Recycling

This week our class will take part in the recycling competition being held in our school. We are recycling aluminium cans.

Please crush the cans before bringing them to school. The previous classes brought in more than 1000 cans and we hope to beat them!

Ollie Recycles is a cool site that teaches you all about recycling.

ANZAC DAY

The 25th April is a special  day in Australia and New Zealand. It is day we remember the  landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on April 25th 1915 during World War I. The day has now become a time to remember all those who have fought for Australia and lost their lives doing so.

Schools have a special ANZAC Day parade and a wreath is laid to remember fallen soldiers. On the 25th the day starts with a dawn service. Each town has an ANZAC Day parade through town and a wreath laying ceremony. Many families cook special ANZAC biscuits. Here is a recipe you can try at home. They are delicious.

ANZAC Biscuits

2 cups of rolled oats
2 cups flour
2 cups coconut
1 1/2 cups sugar
250g butter
4 tablespoons golden syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoon boiling water

Method:
  • Turn oven to 160'C.
  • Lightly grease oven trays.
  • Put oats, flour, coconut, sugar in big mixing bowl.
  • Melt butter and golden syrup in pan. Take off heat.
  • Mix baking soda and boiling water in a cup.
  • Add to melted butter in the pan.
  • Quickly add to big mixing bowl. Mix well.
  • Roll tablespoonful lots into balls.
  • Put on trays 5cm apart.

Jellyfish?

Rhiannon brought in a u-shaped jellyfish she had found on the beach over the week-end. These are often found on the beaches around Bowen.

Later when I went home I decided to find out more about them. Imagine my surprise when I found out they were not jellyfish at all but a snail egg sac with hundreds of eggs inside! I definitely learnt something new today.

Caught Reading

Each week at our Friday parade, we announce students who have been 'caught reading'. James has been trying hard to improve his reading skills this year and was 'caught reading' this week.

James chose a wonderful book called 'Look See, Look at me!' which has beautiful illustrations. Well done James.

Click here to complete a jigsaw puzzle. You can also change number of pieces.
